Microplastics in Glaciers: First Results from the Vatnajökull Ice Cap

چکیده

Microplastic particles, as a second-phase material in ice, may contribute to the effect such particles have on melting and rheological behaviour of glaciers, thus influence future meltwater contribution oceans rising sea levels. Hence, it is utmost importance map understand presence dispersal microplastics global scale. In this work, we identified microplastic snow cores collected remote pristine location Vatnajökull ice cap Iceland. Utilising optical microscopy µ-Raman spectroscopy, visualised various sizes materials. Our findings support that atmospheric transport one important pathways for pollution.

Will Present Day Glacier Retreat Increase Volcanic Activity? Stress induced by Recent Glacier Retreat and its Effect on Magmatism at the Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland

Global warming causes retreat of ice caps and ice sheets. Can melting glaciers trigger increased volcanic activity? Since 1890 the largest ice cap of Iceland, Vatnajökull, with an area of ~8000 km, has been continuously retreating losing about 10% of its mass during last century. Present-day uplift around the ice cap is as high as 25 mm/yr. We evaluate interactions between ongoing glacio-isosta...

Accelerating ice loss from the fastest Greenland and Antarctic glaciers

[1] Ice discharge from the fastest glaciers draining the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets – Jakobshavn Isbrae (JI) and Pine Island Glacier (PIG)– continues to increase, and is now more than double that needed to balance snowfall in their catchment basins. Velocity increase probably resulted from decreased buttressing from thinning (and, for JI, breakup) of their floating ice tongues, and from...

Rapid changes in ice discharge from Greenland outlet glaciers.

Using satellite-derived surface elevation and velocity data, we found major short-term variations in recent ice discharge and mass loss at two of Greenland's largest outlet glaciers. Their combined rate of mass loss doubled in less than a year in 2004 and then decreased in 2006 to near the previous rates, likely as a result of fast re-equilibration of calving-front geometry after retreat. Total...

The Motion of Ice Sheets and Glaciers

The distribution of velocity along a vertical line in Greenland is calculated. Almost all the relative shear motion is concentrated at and very near to the bottom, and this result is thought to apply generally in Greenland and Antarctica. It is due to the relatively high temperature of the lowest layers and the strong dependence of creep rate on temperature. The outward velocity being thus almo...

Tracking Retreat of the North Seasonal Ice Cap on Mars: Results from the Themis Inves- Tigation

1 Introduction The CO2 ice caps on Mars advance and retreat with the seasons. This phenomenon was first observed by Cassini and then confirmed by numerous ground based observations in 19th and 20th centuries [1]. With the advent of the space age observations of the seasonal ice cap were done by all orbiting spacecraft starting with Mariner 7. Viking Orbiters and more recently the Mars Global Su...
